For many autistic individuals, the nervous system operates in a state of chronic dysregulation. Sensory input that others filter automatically arrives unfiltered and overwhelming. Social environments demand constant interpretation and adaptation. Transitions, uncertainty, and unexpected change can trigger responses that appear disproportionate, but are entirely logical given the neurological experience underlying them.
Somatic practice, which refers to therapeutic approaches that work through and with the body, offers a uniquely effective pathway to nervous system regulation for autistic people.
Understanding Autistic Nervous System Differences
Autism is increasingly understood not primarily as a social communication disorder, but as a difference in how the nervous system processes and integrates sensory, interoceptive, and proprioceptive information. Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr Stephen Porges, provides a useful framework: many autistic individuals spend disproportionate time in sympathetic activation (fight/flight) or dorsal vagal shutdown (freeze/collapse) states, with less access to the ventral vagal “social engagement” state associated with connection, learning, and regulation.
This is not a choice or a behaviour. It is a neurobiological reality. And it means that effective support must address the nervous system directly, not merely the behaviours it produces.
Why Somatic Approaches Work
Talk-based therapies rely on access to the prefrontal cortex, the brain’s executive centre for reasoning, language, and insight. But when the nervous system is dysregulated, prefrontal function is significantly reduced. The body, however, remains accessible even in states of high arousal or shutdown.
Somatic practices, including yoga, breathwork, movement, and body-based mindfulness, work directly with the autonomic nervous system. They build interoceptive awareness (the ability to notice and name internal body states), support co-regulation through relational attunement, and gradually expand the individual’s “window of tolerance”, the zone within which they can function, learn, and connect.
Yoga as a Somatic Tool for Autism
Yoga, when adapted appropriately for autistic nervous systems, provides a powerful somatic toolkit. Specific breathing techniques activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing physiological arousal. Proprioceptive input through weight-bearing postures supports body awareness and grounding. Rhythmic, predictable movement sequences reduce uncertainty and build a sense of safety and agency.
Crucially, the relational context of yoga therapy matters enormously. A practitioner trained in neurodevelopmental approaches brings not just poses and techniques, but attunement: the ability to read and respond to a person’s nervous system state in real time, offering co-regulation before self-regulation is possible.
Building Long-Term Resilience
The goal of somatic practice in autism support is not to eliminate autistic responses or enforce neurotypical behaviour. It is to expand capacity, to help autistic individuals access more regulated states more of the time, to build a richer repertoire of self-regulation strategies, and to support greater wellbeing, connection, and participation in daily life.
